The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have positioned an M61 Vulcan cannon on the northern border to counter the increasing drone threat in the area. The Israeli Tamar Group produced the cannon, according to a report on Sunday. In May, Channel 12 reported that Israel was considering purchasing the cannon system from the US to enhance its air defense capabilities against drones.
The M61 Vulcan cannon, with its six 20mm barrels, can fire approximately 6,000 rounds per minute, making it a formidable addition to Israel’s defense arsenal. The report highlights that the US has previously utilized this system to protect its floating pier built for humanitarian purposes. The cannon also saw action in Iraq, as noted by Channel 12.
Footage alleging to show a drone flying over northern Israel was widely shared on social media following recent alerts, underlining the persistent threat faced by the region. An older iteration of the Vulcan cannon was first sent to Israel by the US during the Yom Kippur War. It became operational during the First Lebanon War, where it was used in combat in Beirut.
The cannon’s mobility proved advantageous during these conflicts. In the early 2000s, the IDF decided to keep the Vulcan cannon within the air force due to its effectiveness.
