GreenIron, a Swedish start-up, is preparing to launch operations using renewable hydrogen from Norway. The company has signed a contract with Norwegian Hydrogen to supply green hydrogen for its fossil-free metal production plant in Sandviken, Sweden. Deliveries to GreenIron’s site will begin soon, with the hydrogen sourced from a newly opened production plant in Norway.

As GreenIron scales up production in 2025, the contracted hydrogen volumes will quickly increase, requiring additional dedicated hydrogen production capacity. Norwegian Hydrogen recently completed the first deliveries of green hydrogen from its production site in Hellesylt, Norway.

GreenIron’s sustainable hydrogen partnership

The site has a daily production capacity of up to 1.3 tonnes and already supplies hydrogen to its first customer, Veidekke, a Norwegian construction and civil engineering company. GreenIron’s COO, Ulrika Molander, said, “Collaboration with our supplier secures our supply chain as we begin commercial production and prepare for scaling up volumes and expansion.

The Sandviken plant is expected to start producing iron by the end of 2024, using green hydrogen as a reducing agent in its production process. The hydrogen will be transported by road in pressurized containers from the Hellesylt plant, which is nearly 800 km away.

Norwegian Hydrogen CEO Jens Berge stated, “This contract aligns with our strategy to lead green hydrogen supply and to support industry clients like GreenIron who are acting on their commitment to reducing emissions.”

GreenIron plans to produce up to 28,000 tonnes of direct reduced iron (DRI) annually at its Sandviken plant, which secured environmental permits earlier this year. This partnership between GreenIron and Norwegian Hydrogen represents a significant step towards reducing emissions in the iron and steel industry and aligns with broader environmental sustainability goals.
