Nintendo’s latest installment in the Legend of Zelda series, “Echoes of Wisdom,” has captivated fans with its unique gameplay mechanics. Players are using the game’s “echoes” feature to create cheat codes and inventive solutions to challenges. In the game, Princess Zelda can magically bind herself to various items that produce interesting effects.
One player used a green machine that blasts gusts of wind to propel a table across the screen, dubbing the creation “Table go vroom-vroom.”
The game revolves around Zelda’s ability to copy and repurpose enemies and objects. Early in its development, the game included features that allowed developers to edit dungeons by copying and pasting objects like doors or candles. This expanded the potential for players to create their own gameplay and even cheat codes.
However, series producer Eiji Aonuma had a different vision. He highlighted the fun of placing items in the game field that can be used creatively to fight enemies. Echoes of Wisdom is not designed as a dungeon-builder, but like “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” its open-ended mechanics allow for creative problem-solving.
Creative uses for echoes feature
Despite its simplicity, one of the most useful items is a plain, brown-framed bed. Players have found multiple uses for beds, from creating bridges and ladders to taking naps mid-battle to recover health.
On Reddit, players share their inventive solutions, bypassing gated areas and defying gravity. One player figured out how to create a flying contraption without a bed by combining a crow, a rock, and an enemy that generates wind gusts. Another player in the game’s water temple used echoes to create a cube of water that Zelda can swim through, enabling them to ascend quickly.
These creative workarounds align with Nintendo’s intention to empower players to be “mischievous.” Director Tomomi Sano mentioned that the goal is for players to find ways to use echoes that feel almost like cheating. Flying beds and other outlandish creations embody the game’s magic—the thrill of discovering new ways to beat the game. Speedrunners and casual players have been finding unconventional ways to play games for years, and “Echoes of Wisdom” gives them the tools to continue this tradition.
Sometimes, the player’s imagination only limits the solution to in-game challenges.
