X, previously known as Twitter, has announced the international expansion of its passkeys function for all global iPhone users. The upgraded security measure adds an additional layer of protection to user accounts, thereby decreasing the risk of unauthorized access. The goal is to increase user confidence and improve the platform’s usability.
The passkeys feature was initially released for iOS users in the United States earlier this year. After significant success, X decided to expand this function to its global iOS user base, making this a remarkable step in the feature’s international rollout.
Passkeys work to enhance security and simplify the login process.
Global expansion of X’s passkey feature
Similar to unlocking a device, the passkey provides a safer way for users to sign into various applications, reducing the risk of phishing and other digital threats. A user only needs one passkey, which makes it unnecessary to remember multiple passwords and hence, more convenient.
Apple first integrated passkeys into iOS in 2022, in line with the release of iOS 16. Despite initial concerns about compatibility with different devices, the feature has been successfully established across a wide range of devices, from the iPhone 13 to the latest iPads and Macbooks.
To activate passkeys on an iPhone’s X application, users need to follow a series of steps: sign into the app, go to their account, choose ‘Settings and Privacy’, then ‘Security and Account Access’, and follow the instructions to set up the passkey. To bolster security, users can also enable two-factor authentication, which involves a secondary verification step each time the account is accessed from a new device.
With the integration of passkeys, X joins renowned companies like Google, PayPal, Best Buy, eBay, Dashlane, and Microsoft. This development underlines X’s commitment to user security and reflects their dedication to fostering a secure, user-centered digital platform.
