The Find My Device feature is launching for Android in the U.S. and Canada and is designed to assist users in locating lost devices and items. This function, which relies on a vast network of over a billion Android devices, is not limited to the U.S. and Canada; plans for global expansion are in place.
This ground-breaking feature can make compatible Android devices ring or point out their location on a map, even if offline. Notably, Pixel 8 and 8 Pro models can do this even if they’re off or their batteries are dead.
Additionally, starting in May, this feature can track items like keys or wallets via Bluetooth tracker tags. Brands like Eufy, Jio, and Motorola will offer these tags. This feature also provides essential protection against unwanted tracking.
Another useful function is the “Find Nearby” function.
Expanding device tracking feature to Android
When coupled with the Bluetooth tags, it can help locate commonplace items quickly. Voice commands can be used, making the function even more user-friendly.
Housing gadgets, such as Nest, can also integrate with this feature to help find misplaced items within homes. Users can also share the tracking capabilities for communal items like house keys or TV remotes with others, making communal living more convenient.
Security is a top priority for the Find My Device feature, offering multiple layers of protection, including end-to-end encryption of location data and collective device location reports to avoid unwanted tracking.
Finally, this feature is compatible with Android devices running version 9 or later. In the near future, it will connect with headphones from brands like JBL and Sony via software updates.
