Sony is reportedly in talks to acquire Kadokawa Corporation, the media conglomerate that owns FromSoftware, the developer behind the popular video game “Elden Ring.” The news caused Kadokawa’s shares to surge by 23%, hitting their daily limit. The potential acquisition aligns with Sony’s strategy to expand its entertainment portfolio, particularly in games, movies, and anime. Sony Group President Hiroki Totoki discussed the possible acquisition at the company’s annual strategy briefing in Tokyo earlier this year.
Kadokawa, known for its diverse media ventures, including publishing, anime, and video games, would significantly bolster Sony’s library of intellectual property. This would provide new opportunities for cross-platform content creation and distribution. Kadokawa has confirmed receiving a buyout offer from Sony but insists that no decision has been made yet.
Takeshi Natsuno, Kadokawa’s representative, stated, “The Company has received an initial letter of intent to acquire the Company’s shares, but no decision has been made at this time.”
Sony has declined to comment on the matter so far.
Sony pursuing Kadokawa acquisition
Kadokawa’s business extends into areas that fit into Sony’s broader entertainment offering, including anime, manga, TV, and film.
In addition to FromSoftware, Kadokawa owns several other game developers, such as Danganronpa developer Spike Chunsoft and Octopath Traveler developer Acquire. Former Blizzard Entertainment President Mike Ybarra, now with Kadokawa Corporation, described the potential acquisition as “probably a top 2 acquisition in video gaming in the last 15+ years, if not ever.” He praised FromSoftware for consistently delivering artistic, game-of-the-year-worthy hits. Ybarra compared the significance of the potential acquisition to Microsoft’s purchase of Mojang, the makers of Minecraft, for $2.5 billion.
He suggested that only hypothetical acquisitions of industry giants like Valve or Nintendo could rival the impact of Sony buying FromSoftware. The acquisition would strengthen Sony’s position in the gaming industry and align with its broader entertainment market ambitions. However, Ybarra cautioned that such major mergers often lead to layoffs.
One potential positive outcome of the acquisition could be a highly anticipated Bloodborne remake, as Sony owns the game rights, not FromSoftware.
