NVIDIA has released a playable demo of Half-Life 2 RTX, showcasing the game’s cutting-edge graphics enhancements. The demo is available for free to Half-Life 2 owners on Steam.

The mod, developed using NVIDIA’s RTX Remix platform, brings features like DLSS 4 support, ray tracing, and improved textures to the classic game.

The demo includes two chapters, one from Ravenholm and another from Nova Prospekt, lasting about two hours in total. To experience the new graphical features, players should select “New Game” and then choose the Ravenholm chapter. After completing Ravenholm, the RTX-enabled Nova Prospekt chapter will become available.

While a release date for the full version of Half-Life 2 RTX has not been announced yet, the demo highlights the potential of NVIDIA’s RTX Remix platform. This platform allows modders to visually remaster older games with advanced effects like volumetric lighting and realistic reflections. However, these enhancements require high-end NVIDIA RTX graphics cards.

Owners of RTX 30- and 40-series GPUs may need to adjust settings for the best performance. The Half-Life 2 RTX demo serves as an impressive proof of concept for the RTX platform, demonstrating the capabilities of modern graphics technology in revitalizing classic games.

NVIDIA has also officially released RTX Remix, which includes DLSS 4 and RTX Neural Shaders. These technologies aim to deliver higher frame rates, crisper visuals, and an overall more immersive gaming experience. In addition to the Half-Life 2 RTX demo, NVIDIA has released a new GeForce Game Ready driver (version 572.83).
