Ubisoft has delayed the release of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” to February 14, 2025, following a strong push from the game’s developers. The team identified a need for more time to refine the game and address key issues. According to a report based on accounts from seven developers working on the project, staff urged Ubisoft executives to postpone the release to fix bugs and better incorporate recent changes to gameplay mechanics.
These adjustments were informed by playtests and mock reviews. Ubisoft is also taking extra time to address historical and cultural concerns, particularly regarding the portrayal of the character Yasuke. This refinement process has been ongoing since before the game’s public reveal and has been accelerated in recent months.
The delay follows a mixed reception for another Ubisoft title, “Star Wars Outlaws,” which may have influenced the decision to allow more development time for “Assassin’s Creed Shadows.” Improving the game’s quality is seen as crucial, especially after “Shadows” received a middling user score on Metacritic and did not impress in another review. “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” will now launch on February 14, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Ubisoft adjusts release plans
The game’s pre-order numbers are solid, although not matching those of “Valhalla,” which launched on past-generation consoles. The numbers are expected to improve following the announcement of the game’s release on Steam. Ubisoft Quebec, the studio behind “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” is now focused on delivering a polished and refined experience.
Fans are hopeful that the extra development time will ensure the game meets their expectations. The delay comes as Ubisoft faces significant challenges, including a lackluster games pipeline and pressure from investors. The company’s shares have fallen to decade lows, and activist investor AJ Investments is pushing for a sale to private equity firms or Chinese gaming giant Tencent.
Despite these challenges, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has acknowledged the need for greater efficiency while delighting players. The company’s executive committee is launching a review to improve execution and navigate these turbulent times.
