Nvidia, the chipmaking giant, is reportedly in talks with Elon Musk about investing in his rapidly growing artificial intelligence startup, xAI. A source familiar with the matter revealed that xAI, known for powering the Grok chatbot on Musk’s X social network, is seeking to raise several billion dollars. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that xAI is looking to secure significant funding.

While the Information noted that Musk was in discussions with various tech companies, specific names were not disclosed. However, venture firms such as Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and Vy Capital have been involved in the recent funding discussions. Nvidia, under the leadership of CEO Jensen Huang, has a history of praising Musk and maintaining a collaborative relationship with him.

Although Nvidia declined to comment on the potential investment, the company strongly denied previous investment rumors earlier this year. Sources indicate that Musk anticipates a major fundraising round in January, which could value xAI at up to $75 billion. Industry experts point out that it is not uncommon for chipmakers like Nvidia to co-invest with their customers on strategic projects.

Nvidia considers investing in xAI

An anonymous Nvidia analyst stated that xAI’s competitors would still need to purchase Nvidia’s chips, regardless of the investment, suggesting the transaction’s feasibility from a business perspective. Nvidia highlighted its corporate investment strategy in a blog post, emphasizing strategic collaborations that stimulate joint innovation, enhance the Nvidia platform, and expand its ecosystem.

Over the past year, Nvidia invested in more than two dozen companies as advancements in AI and accelerated computing continue at a rapid pace. Some industry insiders believe a partnership between xAI and Nvidia would be logical, given Musk’s extensive use of Nvidia’s technology across his various enterprises. For example, Nvidia’s stock rose after Musk indicated that Tesla would require more of Nvidia’s high-end chips for its AI initiatives.

Musk also stated that xAI would need 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips to train upgraded versions of its chatbot, Grok 3, while Grok 2 used approximately 20,000 chips. In April, Nvidia’s CEO praised Musk for constructing the fastest supercomputer on the planet with Nvidia’s assistance in just 19 days. Musk is also quoted in a Nvidia press release, acknowledging Nvidia’s superior hardware for AI applications.

xAI, Musk’s latest venture, competes directly with Google’s Gemini AI platform and OpenAI-backed ChatGPT. Nvidia’s potential investment in xAI underscores the deepening collaboration between the two tech giants and highlights the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence and accelerated computing.
