The county was named after the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León while because he was the first European reaching the peninsula. Within the social services, for example, there is a health department, united partners for human services, resources directory, second harvest food bank, etc. Some of the outdoor activities are county parks, Florida wildlife showcase, and Florida National wildlife refuges, among others.
