SO happy that #FantasianNeoDimension exists.
Fantasian is a criminally-overlooked modern JRPG classic & this re-release brings it to a much larger audience with some smart new features.
It really feels like a long-lost PS1 Final Fantasy in the best way! https://t.co/o1tQ1UReoQ pic.twitter.com/ccPt4be81N— Brad Shankar ? The Game Awards (@bradshankar) December 4, 2024
Fantasian, an Apple Arcade exclusive RPG developed by Mistwalker and Square Enix, is making its way to consoles and PC on December 5. The game, often described as Final Fantasy in all but name, is a collaboration between industry giants Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu. The console and PC version, titled Fantasian Neo Dimension, remains largely unchanged from the original, with the notable addition of voice acting.
This new feature is expected to enhance the gaming experience and add depth to the storytelling.
Fantasian is a masterpiece, and Neo Dimension makes it better in nearly every way. Anyone that’s complained about Final Fantasy not going back to its turn-based roots, Fantasian feels like what would’ve happened if we kept getting those classic games. https://t.co/HBWuSd8Lqz

One of the game’s unique mechanics is the Dimengeon, a device that allows players to store random battles and fight them later. However, the Dimengeon has a limit, requiring players to eventually face their stored foes.
Fantasian Neo Dimension follows the story of Leo, an amnesiac adventurer who finds himself jumping between realms.

As players uncover Leo’s story, they encounter a memorable cast of characters, including the healer Kina and the spirited princess Cheryl. The narrative blends serious themes with humor and lighthearted moments.
The game’s cutscenes elevate the drama and relationships among characters, with comic relief provided by party members like the boisterous ship captain Zinikr and the literal-minded researcher Valrika.
New release enhances Fantasian experience
Recurring characters, such as the Cinderella Tri-Stars, add delightful humor reminiscent of classic JRPGs.
Fantasian Neo Dimension’s art design features vivid, hand-crafted backgrounds, although some environmental details may appear blurry in 4K. The control schemes, including gamepad, mouse, and WASD keys, could benefit from refinement to address jarring camera movements. Combat involves random enemy encounters, with the Dimengeon device allowing players to “bank” enemies for larger battles.
While this feature adds a strategic layer, it can become tedious in the latter stages of the game. Battles are turn-based, with character skills and spells capable of piercing multiple enemies. Despite some challenges, the game’s Normal Mode makes it more accessible for newcomers.
Additionally, players can choose from battle themes of various Final Fantasy titles, adding a nostalgic touch to the experience. While Fantasian Neo Dimension has its flaws, it remains a noteworthy title that honors and innovates upon the traditions of classic RPGs. Fans of the genre will find much to enjoy in this collaboration between Mistwalker and Square Enix.
