The release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has been met with great enthusiasm from fans and critics alike. The game has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the most popular title on Xbox, breaking a nine-year streak of PlayStation dominance in the franchise. One of the key factors contributing to this success is the game’s availability on Xbox Game Pass from day one.
This strategic move has likely boosted the player count on the platform, despite the absence of any platform-exclusive content. Treyarch and Raven, the developers behind Black Ops 6, have delivered a game that has garnered higher review scores compared to its recent predecessors. The game is set in the early 1990s, during the end of the Cold War, and features a dynamic campaign filled with high-stakes heists and spy activities.
Breaking Xbox dominance
Multiplayer enthusiasts can explore 16 new maps at launch, with 12 core 6v6 maps and four Strike maps. The popular Round-Based Zombies mode also makes a return, offering players the chance to tackle hordes of the undead across two new maps.
Leslie, the associate creative director at Treyarch, credits the game’s resurgence in interest to its ability to attract both long-time fans and new players. “We’ve gotten to the point now where Black Ops and Call of Duty have been around so long–I’ve been working on it for 16 years,” said Leslie. “The challenge for us is how do you bring along the fans that love Call of Duty, but also create an environment where new fans feel welcomed?”
According to Activision, Black Ops 6 has had record-breaking engagement metrics in the franchise, including total players, total hours played, and total matches.
While exact sales figures have not been released, putting the game on Game Pass appears to have met the company’s goals for the franchise, at least for now. As the game continues to captivate audiences with its intense action and immersive settings, players can look forward to post-launch content that promises even more maps and groundbreaking experiences in both Multiplayer and Zombies modes.
