A survey of 500 female small business owners and 500 aspiring female entrepreneurs found that business ownership increases professional and personal fulfillment. The study, conducted by Talker Research, revealed that 91% of current owners feel fulfilled in their professional lives, compared to 55% of those who haven’t transitioned into business ownership. Over the next decade, 80% of respondents expect to see more women in leadership roles within businesses.

Notably, 58% of current business owners launched their ventures in the past six years, and 89% of aspiring owners plan to do the same within five years. Key reasons for pursuing business ownership included the desire to create a better world for future generations (26%) and feeling stuck in previous jobs (23%). The leading motivations for aspiring female entrepreneurs include the desire to be their own boss (64%) and needing a more flexible schedule (38%).

However, the path to business ownership is not without challenges.

Fulfillment through business ownership

Current owners cited a need for better understanding of the small business landscape (30%) and greater support from fellow business owners (26%) as well as family and friends (25%) before starting out.

Future entrepreneurs expressed concerns about building a customer base (47%), getting the word out (37%), handling unforeseen challenges (33%), and creating a social media or online presence (29%). Carin Andersen Perino, Kiddie Academy franchisee, shared, “As a female entrepreneur, my journey to business ownership hasn’t been risk-free, but it has changed my life and my family’s lives for the better. I no longer wonder ‘what if’ and feel proud to contribute to my community.”

The survey also explored the most fulfilling aspects of business ownership.

For some, it’s the satisfaction of making final decisions and the joy of satisfied customers. For others, it’s being able to provide for their family and spend quality time with them, or knowing they can leave something valuable to their children. “Feeling more passionate about their work and finding fulfillment are top benefits for future entrepreneurs,” said Susan Wise, executive vice president with Kiddie Academy.

“Franchising allows you to go into business for yourself but not by yourself, offering a rewarding experience linked with personal values.”

The survey was commissioned by Kiddie Academy and conducted online by Talker Research between Feb 6 and Feb 13, 2025.
