Music gets pirated for a large number of reasons, but I think that lack of awareness is the main problem. When I say lack of awareness I am referring to the lack of physical representation that the act of downloading an album has.
If you could make any youngster understand that getting a torrent and downloading the latest album by Kings Of Leon is the same as going into the store and slipping a copy of the CD into your jacket, then we could be getting places. Unfortunately, that is not possible. And it just brings to mind how the disconnection between online and physical deeds is hard to be put in perspective.
That is what the Music Matters website hopes to do for all of us. Basically, the site will let sites where music is hosted legally have a badge which makes that clear for everybody.
At the end of the day, the mentality of people is the hardest thing to change. I think that we should take it one step at a time. And the Music Matters website stands as an excellent first step towards making the web crystalline.

Why WhyMusicMatters.org It Might Be A Killer
It is hard to change the way people feel about downloading music. This site aims to provide a solution that is clear and that does not patronize anybody at all – it just sets the record straight.
