Tewspaper.com – A Newspaper Made Up By Social Content

Tewspaper.comTewspaper is an experiment, but it is an interesting one. We can define it as a newspaper that is made up of information which is culled from the Social Web.

Messages are filtered both by story and by topic, and some of the results are reviewed by hand. The truth is that social media is characterized by the speed at which rumors spread – not long ago somebody reported that Canadian musician Gordon Lightfoot had died, and about a dozen tributes emerged before an indignant Lightfoot caught wind of it all and said, “Guys, hold it, I’m still here!”. I think a resource like this one should be monitored very closely to go beyond being interesting to become something trustable.

The site actually employs an algorithm to determine the newsworthiness of what is featured, but (again) I just fear that a social media newspaper can open the door to news that are not really news being reported to all and sundry. I am very keen on seeing how that risk is diminished here.

Currently, national and local news for five cities only are included: Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and New York City. According to the team behind the project, the idea is to double that number within the next couple of weeks.

Tewspaper.com In Their Own Words

“Tewspaper is a virtual newspaper built from social media. Tewspaper currently covers breaking news in five cities across the United States. We have plans to expand coverage across many different cities, states, and countries.”

Why Tewspaper.com It Might Be A Killer

The concept is interesting, and if a way can be found to ensure the veracity of what is published then maybe something like this will have chance of standardizing itself.
