Columbia University researchers have discovered a connection between the opening of Starbucks locations and a rise in local entrepreneurship. The study suggested introducing familiar coffee shops stimulates the entrepreneurial spirit by seemingly fostering an environment conducive to creativity and innovation.

The finding, often called the ‘Starbucks effect,’ implies a significant correlation between the arrival of the coffee giant and increased economic activity. Local entrepreneurship rises between 5% and 11.8% over seven years following the opening of a new Starbucks store, leading to the emergence of 1.1 to 3.5 additional new businesses each year.

The concept of a ‘third place,’ a social environment distinct from home and work, is integral to Starbucks’ business model and is thought to have contributed to the surge in entrepreneurial ventures.

Starbucks impact on local entrepreneurial growth

These ‘third places’ are more than just coffee shops, evolving into incubators of entrepreneurship, encouraging lively interactions, networking, and idea exchange.

Starbucks’ adoption of a European café culture model, a setting that promotes community bonding, has been suggested to spur entrepreneurial growth. Such environments facilitate networking, idea generation, and identification of potential issues and help budding businesses find investors, thus easing the path to the business establishment.

The study also considered areas where Starbucks intended to establish outlets but faced challenges due to city planning disputes, zoning issues, or community resistance. Notably, locations impacted by Starbucks and Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson’s collaboration saw a significant surge in new businesses, recording a 29.7% increase.

The ‘third place’ concept remains a consistent element in Starbucks’ business plan, influencing local entrepreneurship for up to seven years after a new store opens. This impact extends beyond increasing coffee consumption to creating a community space that nurtures creativity and entrepreneurship, which implies Starbucks’ role as a catalyst for entrepreneurial growth and local innovation.
