Columbia University’s project discovers a boom in local enterprises when a Starbucks outlet opens up in an area devoid of competing coffee shops. The study indicates the “Starbucks effect” stimulates economic activity, drawing more businesses to the locality. The effect results in not just enhanced local commerce but also job creation. However, critics worry about the rise in property prices and rent, and the shift in the local neighborhood’s character, possibly leading to gentrification.

The research quantified an uptick of local entrepreneurship by 5 to 11.8 percent, continuing for about seven years after a Starbucks arrives. This “Starbucks effect” encourages the founding of 1.1 to 3.5 new businesses annually, a testament to the significant influence of multinational corporations like Starbucks on local economies, thanks to the foot traffic and attention they bring to the vicinity.

This effect is linked to Starbucks’ “third place” theory, creating a unique gathering spot beyond homes and offices for people to engage, generate ideas, problem solve and establish financial backing. This model sees Starbucks as an important locale for exchanging ideas, and a catalyst for future entrepreneurs to launch their ventures.

Starbucks’ presence sparks local economic growth

It’s more than just a coffeehouse; it’s a networking and brainstorming hub.

As a control group, the study used neighborhoods initially considered for Starbucks’ locations but hindered due to urban planning and zoning issues. Despite demographic and economic similarities with Starbucks’ locations, a key difference was the absence of Starbucks outlets, suggesting any growth differences between these regions could creditably be due to Starbucks’ presence.

The collaboration between Starbucks and business personality Earvin “Magic” Johnson witnessed a remarkable 29.7 percent increase in the expected number of startups in chosen neighborhoods. This venture exceeded market expectations, invigorating local economies and breathing new life into underserved urban communities. It stands as a successful model for prospective corporate-community partnerships aiming to effect meaningful progress and growth.

The researchers conclude Starbucks stimulates creativity and entrepreneurship at a local level, providing a venue for community members to socialize and innovate. They emphasize how Starbucks’ global presence sets a stage for entrepreneurship worldwide, driving local economies and fostering creativity. The researchers see merit in further studying the Starbucks phenomenon for more insights into its role in community development and innovation.
