Sony has unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro, a more powerful version of its popular gaming console.

The PS5 Pro will launch on November 7 and cost £699.99, making it the most expensive console from Sony to date. The PS5 Pro offers advanced graphics and the ability to display demanding games at higher, more consistent frame rates.

Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PS5, described it as “the most powerful console we’ve ever built”. The console aims to resolve the issue of choosing between better visuals and smoother gameplay.

Piers Harding-Rolls, an analyst from research firm Ampere, noted that the price point will likely cause a lot of commentary.

He believes Sony is betting that the improved performance will encourage users to upgrade their hardware and invest more in software.

Christopher Dring, head of GamesIndustry.biz, commented that the PS5 Pro is targeted at PlayStation’s most enthusiastic audience.

He mentioned that the console industry has faced challenges this year, with falling sales of current-generation consoles.

While the PS5 Pro may not significantly change this situation, Sony could be anticipating the release of highly anticipated games like Grand Theft Auto VI next year. Paul Tamburro from PlayStation LifeStyle expressed disappointment that the PS5 Pro, launching without a disc drive and still targeting 60 FPS, might not justify its high price point for current PS5 owners.

This release marks Sony’s second major foray into “pro” consoles, following the PS4 Pro in 2016. It comes at a time when PCs have been gaining ground in terms of performance, with Nvidia’s Geforce 40 series graphics cards setting a high bar. Despite this, consoles like the PS5 Pro offer a balanced approach to visuals and pricing, making them appealing to a broad audience.

While the PS5 Pro presents exciting advancements, its high price point and specific target audience may make it a debated addition to Sony’s console lineup.
