Hyperlink your world with Semapedia, a community-driven project based on connecting internet content with it’s real world counterpart. Essentially what you can do with Semapedia is create and distribute mobile accessible tags which act as hyperlinks to Wikipedia and their sisterprojects such as Wikibooks and Wikinews.
It is as easy as cut and paste. Save the URL to the destination on Wikipedia and imputting the link on their form. After this, you’ll have a readymade PDF file to download, then you can place the tags in their physical location in the real world. Of course, you can use these tags all from your mobile, though you will need to download a 2D Barcode Reader in order to access them.
Semapedia.org In Their Own Words
Our goal is to connect the virtual and physical world by bringing the right information from the internet to the relevant place in physical space.
We believe that bringing knowledge to where it matters changes minds and worlds. Our motivation to create Semapedia is to let everyone collaboratively physically hyperlink their world, thus sharing knowledge and making it accessible to others in a helpful and meaningful way. We strongly believe bringing knowledge to places and things that matter to others is a great way to help others understand our beautiful and complex world.
To accomplish this, we invite you to create and distribute Semapedia-Tags which are in fact cellphone-readable physical hyperlinks to the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia (or any of Wikipedias’ sisterprojects such as Wikibooks, Wikinews , and Wikinews ). You can create such Tags easily yourself by choosing and pasting a Wikipedia URL into our creation-form . Pressing the button will generate a custom PDF file to download and be printed. Once created, you put the Tags up at their according physical location. Others can now use their cellphone to ‘click’ your Tag and access the information you provided them.
Why Semapedia.org It Might Be A Killer
It takes just one step to create a tag, and their catch is that they’re mashing up tags with maps and making it social. This isn’t the first startup to mashup tags with maps, and there are so many other services that include locating newly uploaded flickr photos to their corresponding location on a map, for instance. This seems to be a popular combination though it is yet to be seen a truly winning one. Though, their interface seems to be working smoothly and is neat and easy to navigate.
Some Questions About Semapedia.org
Are there too many startups already who are proving a providing a service too similar to this one? Could they make their service more accessible by providing a map on their homepage, featuring screenshots of newly uploaded photos around the world?
