The “PS Placeable” mod is giving new life to the PlayStation Portable (PSP) by transforming it into a home console. Created by Retro Mod Works, this innovative mod places the PSP inside a 3D-printed case resembling a PlayStation 2, allowing gamers to enjoy their favorite PSP titles on the big screen. The mod retains compatibility with UMD discs and adds Bluetooth controller support, making it easy to play PSP games from the comfort of your couch.
Dan, the modder behind the project, says he almost exclusively uses broken PSPs for these builds, effectively giving them a second chance. Interest in the PS Placeable has been overwhelming, with over 100 orders placed within 24 hours of its announcement. Dan expressed his surprise at the response, stating, “I am honestly shocked.
That is the complete stock of broken PSPs I have squirreled away over the past year for this project.”
For those who already own a PSP, sending in their device for modding can reduce the overall cost. While there is currently a waiting list due to high demand, interested buyers can still place orders for their own PS Placeable.
PsP gaming transformed for big screen
The mod not only brings PSP gaming to a bigger screen but also improves on some of the original hardware’s limitations. Long load times can be alleviated by running games from a memory stick, making the experience even smoother. The community’s response has been largely positive, with many gamers expressing appreciation for the new mod.
One gamer commented, “I agree with the practice of using broken parts to make something like this. I do get worried about kids, even my kids, thinking tech was different than it actually was when I was growing up. The old hardware is rough, and I prefer modded hardware, but I do have originals of all the hardware I modded to preserve what it was really like.”
With the PS Placeable, Retro Mod Works has created a unique way for gamers to relive the PSP’s iconic titles in a home console format.
It’s a perfect blend of nostalgia and modern tech, breathing new life into old hardware. If you’re interested in revamping your PSP experience, this mod certainly seems worth considering.
