The HDMI Forum has announced that it will unveil new specifications for HDMI technology at CES 2025. This update, likely to be called HDMI 2.2, promises to support a wide range of higher resolutions and refresh rates. The new standard is expected to require a new cable to achieve peak performance on upcoming devices.
The HDMI Licensing Administration, the forum’s appointed agent for licensing 2.2, has hinted at “next generation HDMI technology and higher bandwidth” that will be “enabled by a new HDMI cable.”
While the exact specifications have not been revealed, it is speculated that HDMI 2.2 could potentially support higher resolutions and refresh rates without the need for compression.

This would allow it to reach rates comparable to DisplayPort 2.1, which can support over 240 Hz at 4K with a 10-bit color depth.
The announcement coincides with rumors that AMD and Nvidia are set to introduce new GPUs at CES, such as AMD’s Radeon RX 8000 series and Nvidia’s RTX 50-series GPUs. These new graphics cards may capitalize on the enhanced capabilities of HDMI 2.2.
As technology advances, higher refresh rates and resolutions are increasingly in demand for top-tier monitors and the latest game consoles. The introduction of HDMI 2.2 suggests that the standard is attempting to keep pace with these advancements and remain competitive with DisplayPort 2.1.
More details about HDMI 2.2 and the next generation of GPUs are expected to be shared during the HDMI Forum’s press conference on January 6, one day before CES 2025 officially begins.
This event is shaping up to be a significant one for both the consumer electronics and gaming industries.
