Pokémon TCG Pocket, the new smartphone version of the beloved trading card game, has captured the hearts of millennials and parents alike. The game, released last week, is the best virtual rendition of the card game since the Game Boy Color’s Trading Card Game in 1998. The allure of Pokémon TCG Pocket lies in the chance of finding exceptionally rare cards in each pack.

Tapping on a booster pack reveals shiny packets that can be opened with a swipe of the finger. The cards are beautifully presented, and rare ones glisten as you tilt the screen. Upon discovering a particularly rare card, a mini-movie animation showcases the scene depicted on it.

Players can earn one free booster pack every 12 hours, while a £7.99 monthly subscription grants an additional daily pack. There is a daily limit on purchasing more packs, which helps curb the dopamine rush from randomised rewards and prevents the game from feeling exploitative. For those who prefer battling, the game offers unlimited free play with simplified rules that mirror the real-life card game.

Players build a deck of 20 cards from various Pokémon and item cards, with energy generated each turn powering Pokémon attacks.

While not as deep as the physical card game, this version is well-suited for quick mobile play and offers engaging battles against other human players.

However, completing the first set of Pokémon TCG Pocket, known as Genetic Apex, can take a significant amount of time. A player has calculated that it will take approximately 655 days to collect all 286 cards without spending any money. This process demands daily logins and access to a card via the erratic Wonder Pick feature.

Those opting for the $9.99 monthly Premium Pass can complete the set in 437 days, costing about $150 over that period. Despite the game’s various currencies and items being confusing at times, Pokémon TCG Pocket does not excessively hinder enjoyment with monetisation. Although not as generous as Pokémon Go regarding free activities, it balances fun with spending relatively well.

Impressively, the game has already generated a staggering $24 million. The current selection of 226 cards targets the peak millennial nostalgia years of the early 2000s. While some players might eventually tire of it, for now, Pokémon TCG Pocket is a delightful daily indulgence for old-school Pokémaniacs and newcomers alike.
