The Indian startup ecosystem has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, with the number of startups recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) increasing from just 300 in 2016 to over 1.40 lakh as of June 30, 2024. These startups have made a significant impact on the economy, creating more than 16.6 lakh direct jobs across 55 industries. According to Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, the IT services sector has been the top job creator among startups, generating 2.04 lakh jobs.

The healthcare and life sciences sector follows closely, with 1.47 lakh direct jobs created by startups in this field. Education startups have contributed 90,414 jobs, while the construction sector has added 88,702 direct jobs. The government has attributed this impressive growth to various flagship schemes under the Startup India initiative, such as the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS), and Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS).

These programs provide financial support to startups at different stages of their business cycle.

Digital platforms like the Startup India Hub portal and Bharat Startup Knowledge Access Registry (BHASKAR) have also played a crucial role in facilitating access to resources and fostering collaboration within the startup ecosystem.

The Economic Survey 2023-24, presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in July, highlighted the substantial increase in DPIIT-recognized startups. The survey noted that 45% of these startups have emerged from Tier I and Tier II cities, creating more than 12.42 lakh direct jobs and generating a significant economic impact. India has now become the third-largest startup ecosystem globally, with 118 unicorns and 112 soonicorns.

Indian startups raised $8.7 billion in funding during the first nine months of 2024, a 20% year-on-year increase from $7.2 billion in the same period of 2023. The government’s initiatives, such as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s TIDE 2.0 scheme, which has established 51 incubation centers offering financial and technical assistance to young businesses, have been instrumental in nurturing India’s thriving startup ecosystem. As the Indian startup landscape continues to evolve and expand, it is expected to play an increasingly vital role in driving economic growth, creating employment opportunities, and fostering innovation across various sectors.
