“A professional photographer? That guy? You’ve gotta be kiddin’! I can do better myself.” No matter how modest we are, that’s something we all find ourselves saying with the fiercest of convictions at one time or the other. That’s probably because artistic perceptions are subjective by definition, and because people tend to scoff at those who proclaim themselves as “artists”. That breeds contempt, and it leads people to think “If that one’s an artist, then just anybody can be. And that includes me”.
Well, as far as photography is concerned this is a site that will let those who fancy themselves as good (or even consummate) artists determine the true perception that people have of their work.
The site lets people share all their images in a bid to become the most popular photographer in the whole Social scene. This is determined via an influence score and a ranking system of its very own. This influence score is assembled by taking into account how active someone is, and how many “likes” and comments his photos have received.
Users can go against their close friends, and also against the larger photo sharing community itself. Those who have a really high opinion of their work will be able to see if others agree or not, and take both some kudos and some heat in the process.
Personally, I find this site quite reminiscent of Klout, but only that here everything revolves around photos. When one thinks of it, it’s all quite a good idea. And the implementation is not really difficult, so I can but wonder how come nobody had created a site like PhotoRank before. So, all the more credit to the team behind it for having moved into a space nobody else did before. PhotoRank sets the bar all photo sharing websites will be judged by in the future.
