Nothing has officially unveiled the design of the Phone (3a) Pro in a newly released video. The video showcases the phone’s distinctive and prominent camera bump just days before its anticipated launch. According to leaks, the Nothing Phone (3a) series includes the Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro.

While the video does not directly confirm these names, it provides an extensive look at the unique design of the Phone (3a) Pro. The standout feature is its thick, protruding camera module that juts out from the back of the device. The teaser video from Nothing breaks down the design process, showing the various stages and iterations the team went through.

The design evolved over time, with some prototypes resembling leaked images of the standard Phone (3a) and other variations. The video highlights the creativity and engineering behind the final product.

The Nothing Phone (3a) series is set to launch on March 4, promising to bring something new to the smartphone market.

Distinctive camera module design explained

The Nothing Phone 3a and 3a Pro will be officially announced on March 4, but details about the devices have already started to surface. The design team at Nothing has emphasized their deliberate approach to incorporating the chunky camera module, acknowledging that the final design will be divisive. In an era where most smartphones feature flat, utilitarian designs often hidden under protective cases, Nothing aims to stand out.

The 3a Pro ensures that with its large camera module, which includes three rear-facing sensors: a 50MP primary, an 8MP ultrawide, and a 50MP periscope telephoto lens. This distinctive camera setup required modifications to the phone’s PCB to accommodate the thicker periscope assembly. The designers discussed the tight timeline they had for finalizing the industrial design, which lasted only about three months.

They experimented with numerous design iterations to ensure the camera module integrated seamlessly with the phone’s overall aesthetic. While some prototypes minimized the camera’s prominence better, the design team ultimately chose a disk shape that they felt was more consistent with the brand’s design language. “Some people will love it and some people will hate it,” admitted one designer in the video, highlighting the subjective nature of design preferences.

Pricing details will be shared next month, but given that the Nothing Phone 2a and 2 were priced at $350 and $600 respectively, the 3a Pro is expected to fall somewhere in between. The 3a Pro runs on a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor with 12GB of RAM, positioning it against competitors like the Pixel 8a. With the Nothing Phone 3a Pro, the company continues to challenge the status quo in smartphone design, acknowledging that while not everyone may be a fan, those who appreciate distinctive aesthetics will find much to admire.
