Nintendo has recently updated its website for a mysterious playtest, revealing more information to participants about what it entails. The playtest is running from October 23rd at 9 PM ET to November 5th at 8 PM ET and is only available to a select group. The test software requires 2.2GB of free space and is now available to download ahead of the start of gameplay.

While participants didn’t sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), Nintendo requested in the terms and conditions that users refrain from sharing details. However, this request has not been thoroughly followed. Screenshots and information about the playtest are still available on various websites despite Nintendo’s attempts to take leaked media offline.

The leaked details suggest this may be Nintendo’s first attempt at developing an MMO (massively multiplayer online)-style game. The game description states, “the goal is to work with others to fully ‘develop’ a massive, expansive planet by utilizing creativity and framed resources.” As players progress, they will encounter “new lands, enemies, and resources,” and use “Beacons” to create zones that develop the surrounding environment.

These Beacon zones are personal—players can only “move, lift, or edit items” within their own zones and cannot edit anything within someone else’s Beacon. There’s also a separate social hub called the “Dev Core” where players can level up, obtain items, and interact with each other. Nintendo describes “User-Generated Content (UGC) features” which allow players to create and share custom content.

However, players must first pass an in-game test “to show that you understand the importance of respectful communication” before this capability can be unlocked. At first glance, the game shares some similarities with family-friendly MMOs. The intellectual property (IP) for the game appears to be either entirely new or a placeholder for an existing franchise.

This puts to rest previous speculation suggesting the playtest would bring a service related to any existing Nintendo character or franchise. The exact nature of Nintendo’s new venture remains unclear, but the ongoing leaks provide an intriguing look into what could be a significant new direction for the company. As more information surfaces, the gaming community eagerly awaits official confirmation and details from Nintendo about this mysterious playtest and the future of their online gaming offerings.
