Apple has announced two significant updates to its in-car iPhone mirroring system, CarPlay. These updates are expected to improve the user experience for drivers utilizing the system. The first update involves the user interface of CarPlay.

Vehicles with larger center displays will now feature a third row of icons, up from two rows previously. This allows users to access more apps with less swiping, helping drivers keep their eyes on the road. The second update enhances the Apple Maps electric vehicle routing feature within CarPlay.

This improvement integrates with Tesla’s Superchargers, allowing Apple’s system to plan routes that include stops for vehicle charging at these stations. Ford has also released an adapter that enables its vehicles to be charged by Tesla Superchargers. Ford has provided a step-by-step guide on using this feature:

1.

Connect your iPhone to CarPlay.

2.

Open Apple Maps, go to Settings, and confirm your preferred charging network(s), selecting a NACS fast charging station such as Tesla Supercharger. 3. Enter your destination.

4. Apple Maps will calculate the estimated state of charge upon arrival. 5.

If needed, the system will automatically route you to a NACS fast charging station. While the feature already integrates with some vehicles and charging networks, Apple has yet to confirm when the next-generation CarPlay will be released. iOS 18.4, which includes these enhancements, is currently in beta testing and is expected to be available to the general public in early April, according to Apple’s website.
