NCR stands for National Catholic Reporter, and is a site providing news and information of interest to the Catholic world. Established in 1964, it is a weekly newsletter which functions as an independent outlet for journalists and Catholics, as well as for all those who are struggling to come to terms with the complicated moral and social issues of today’s world.
About 23% of the American population defines itself as belonging to the Catholic faith, thus forming the largest religious body in the States. The NCR provides the means of expressing different perspectives and opinions with a view to promoting tolerance and respect. Much of the content of this site deals with issues directly related to the Catholic Church. Over the years, it has tried to provide an alternative to mainstream media by publishing articles of particular concern to everybody, such as peace and non-violence, US war policies, stem cell research, reproduction rights, the oppression of women, to name a few of the topics dealt with.
