Microsoft has released updates to address a frustrating bug that caused some USB printers to print random text and data. The issue affected Windows 10 version 22H2 and Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2. The fix is included in these operating systems’ March 2025 non-security preview updates.
It will also be part of the cumulative updates released during the April 2025 Patch Tuesday. Microsoft recommends installing the latest update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one.
Microsoft fixes USB printer bug
Earlier this month, Microsoft used its Known Issue Rollback (KIR) feature to reverse problematic non-security updates delivered via Windows Update. Impacted users reported their printers printing text that began with “POST /ipp/print HTTP/1.1,” along with other Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) related headers. These issues occurred frequently with printers that were turned on or reconnected after being disconnected.
Microsoft noted, “After installing the January 2025 Windows preview update released January 29, 2025, or later updates, you might observe issues with USB-connected dual-mode printers that support both USB Print and IPP Over USB protocols. The printer might unexpectedly print random text and data, including network commands and unusual characters.”
This week, Microsoft also resolved another known issue following the installation of recent Windows updates since January 2025. This resolution was rolled out via Known Issue Rollback to enterprise customers and will be made generally available in a future Windows Update.
