Microsoft has released a new update for Windows 11, but some users report problems. The update, called KB5051987, is causing issues with File Explorer. When users try to open folders like Desktop, Documents, or Pictures, File Explorer does not respond.
Some users have also noticed that the File Explorer sidebar is not working correctly. Even though File Explorer is still running in the Task Manager, the interface is not fully functional. Only the Home and Gallery folders can be accessed through the sidebar.
To fix these problems, users may need to uninstall the KB5051987 update. To do so, go to Windows Update in the Settings menu.

Click “Uninstall,” find the update, and confirm the decision. After rebooting the system, the computer will return to the January 2025 Update. Users can try to reinstall the update, but it is best to pause updates for a few weeks if the same issues occur.
Microsoft is expected to release an optional update in the third week of February 2025 that should resolve most problems. Since KB5051987 is a mandatory security update, it will install automatically on affected PCs. Users will need to manually uninstall the update and pause updates for up to three weeks or wait for the next optional patch to be released.
Microsoft will likely work quickly to fix these issues, especially with the upcoming deadline for Windows 10 in October. These problems need to be solved as soon as possible for the best user experience and security.
