Marvel Rivals, the hit hero shooter from NetEase, has quickly become one of the biggest games of the year since its launch earlier this month. However, some players have expressed frustration with matches where their entire team consists of duelists, requiring them to play roles like healer or tank to balance the lineup. Despite these concerns, Guangyun “Guangguang” Chen, the game’s creative director, has confirmed that the studio is “not considering a role queue” at the moment.

Chen explained that while a role queue could potentially create balanced teams, it does not align with the team’s vision for the game. “The team’s goal is to offer a wider variety of team composition through team-up skills and their own designs, allowing players to experience their favorite Marvel superheroes without limiting them to specific roles,” Chen stated. He added that data from matches has shown that the game doesn’t currently need a role queue system.

Chen emphasized that the developers want people to have a Marvel experience where they’re free to select what they want. “Since the beta test earlier this year, things have been rational and within expectations.

In our competitive play recently, a lot of different compositions have emerged from players, and we’d like to continue to monitor these fun compositions and how they impact our game,” he said. While some players might be upset by this decision, others appreciate that the developer is allowing for a more chaotic and dynamic gameplay experience. One of the appealing aspects of Marvel Rivals is that every character feels powerful, and matches rarely play out the same way because nearly every character is viable with the right composition or strategy.

Though a role queue might be beneficial in ranked mode, many hope that its potential introduction won’t lead to a shift that balances out all the fun and spontaneity of Marvel Rivals. As the game continues to evolve and respond to player feedback, NetEase aims to keep the gameplay experience diverse and engaging.
