URL shorteners for sharing only specific pages seem to be the latest trend. Not so long ago I reviewed one that let you share only pages in which videos were hosted. And now, the family is swelling ranks with the release of this web-app. Basically, Map.to lets people share nothing but URLs in which maps are featured.
This means that if you have moved to a new State and a relative is coming over to say hello, then you can show him the way to get there by sharing a Map.to URL with him via Twitter, or any other instant notification service in which space is of prime importance.
Some might say that Map.to is way to circumscribed for its own good, but a URL shortener of this nature has one distinct advantage: users know what they are going to find when they open up any Map.to link.
Personally, I find this service interesting. I am glad it is not another generic URL shortener that tries to top Bit.ly without offering any kind of new feature at all. I mean, by now it is clear that nobody could compete with Bit.ly. So why bother? Better to come up with something different, like the ones who dreamed up Map.to did.
