LiveStation, a new product from Microsoft Research and Skinkers, a British start-up, brings you live, interactive TV over the internet. Users will be able to get live TV anywhere there is an internet connection without constant buffering or stopping.
This means of course, that users no longer will have to rely on their cable or actual TV to get programming; users won’t need a desktop tuner either. LiveStation is set to stream over a P2P network using Silverlight (Microsoft’s equivalent of Flash) to play the content on your computer. Live streaming via peer-to-peer technology is meant to bring higher quality images and a better overall user experience. Current hype has billed LiveStation as the Joost killer. Alas, LiveStation is in limited beta so only a privileged few get to check it out.
LiveStation.com In Their Own Words
“Imagine your audience being able to watch your live TV content at their desktop, at the airport, at home and in fact, anywhere they can get an Internet connection to their PC! Imagine a quality image with no buffering or stopping! Imagine the possibilities of being able to allow your audience to ‘click’ on a TV advert exactly as they do on the web but while watching your existing TV channels. All without having to change your current business processes in the slightest!”
Why LiveStation.com It Might Be A Killer
LiveStation, if it lives up to its promises, is just what the people want. There is a huge demand for high quality TV over the internet. So far, there hasn’t been one service that truly accomplishes this. On the marketing side, broadcasters will have an opportunity to build their brand online and reach new audiences.
Some Questions About LiveStation.com
What about the content? Will it be as compelling as the service itself or will users find it lacking? How will it compare to other services like Joost? How’s the picture quality, sound quality etc?
