Google has launched a private preview of its Veo and Imagen 3 generative AI models. Customers of Google’s Vertex AI Cloud package can now generate videos from text prompts and images using Veo.

The Imagen 3 model, designed to create high-quality images from text, will also be available to these customers next week.

Veo is capable of creating 1080p footage that is “consistent and coherent” and can generate videos lasting over a minute. The tool can use both text prompts and images as starting points for videos. However, the model has some flaws, such as issues with cause and effect and artifacting.

Imagen 3 claims to generate the most realistic and highest quality images from simple text prompts, surpassing previous versions in detail, lighting, and artifact reduction. Yet, imperfections remain, such as inconsistencies in lighting effects.

Despite these challenges, Google is eager to integrate more generative AI into enterprise operations. The tech giant notes that among companies using generative AI in production, 86 percent report increased revenue. However, a recent study found that the return on investment from AI projects fell by 4.6 percentage points from 2023 to 2024.

Mondelez International, maker of Oreo, plans to use Veo for marketing content creation with agency partners. Google has implemented prompt-level filters and an indemnity policy to address potential copyright issues. The launch of Google’s Veo video generator comes amid a competitive landscape where major tech companies are racing to innovate in AI-driven video technology.

Amazon and Meta have also introduced their own video creation tools targeting advertisers. As of this update, Alphabet’s Class A shares increased by 0.14% in after-hours trading, reaching $171.58, while Class C shares rose by 0.098% to $173.19.
