FromSoftware has revealed new details about its upcoming multiplayer game, Elden Ring Nightreign.

In an interview, game director Junya Ishizaki shared insights into the development process and the team’s goals for the title. Ishizaki, who previously worked as a battle designer on other FromSoftware games, explained that one of the initial concepts for Nightreign was to create a new sense of battle.

Unlike the slower-paced combat found in Elden Ring, Nightreign will feature a faster tempo, requiring players to adapt quickly and make decisions on the fly. The transition from battle designer to game director has been both challenging and liberating for Ishizaki. “Of course, coming from a battle designer to a director of a game brings with it a lot more freedom.
I have to make a lot more decisions and consider various aspects beyond battles,” he said. Nightreign will place players in squads of three, navigating randomized elements and making adjustments as they go. The game will emphasize self-growth, a common theme in FromSoftware titles.

“We put a lot of trust in players to learn and overcome challenges. This element of self-growth is crucial in Nightreign as well,” Ishizaki noted.
New battle dynamics in Nightreign

One notable feature is the dynamic “Ring of Reign,” a closing boundary on the map that encourages strategic movement and decision-making. While the game wasn’t initially designed as a battle royale, this structure naturally evolved during development. FromSoftware games are known for their sense of isolation, which Nightreign aims to balance with its multiplayer elements.
“While it’s designed as a multiplayer game, we want this to feel like a loose and flexible experience that retains some of that feeling of isolation and venturing into the unknown,” Ishizaki explained. Players can choose to engage with the game solo, exploring the map before converging for a cooperative boss battle. This approach preserves the sense of solitary exploration while introducing cooperative elements.
Throughout the game, Nightreign will incorporate essential role-playing game components such as exploration, character development, and overcoming challenges. Ishizaki emphasized the variety in weapons and equipment, allowing players to experiment with different builds and strategies. “We wanted players to feel more comfortable approaching the unfamiliar in Nightreign,” he stated.
The game aims to provide a unique, multifaceted experience that stays true to FromSoftware’s roots while offering new gameplay dynamics. Elden Ring Nightreign is set to launch on May 30, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. The game will be priced at $40 across all platforms.
