Corry Banks turned a job loss into an opportunity to pursue his passion. When his corporate IT job asked him to relocate, Banks chose to take a severance package instead. He used the money to start his own business, Modbap Modular, which makes electronic music equipment.

Banks had always been a beatmaker, creating music in the boombap style. He found that existing gear often didn’t meet the needs of performing artists like himself. Most equipment was too bulky or lacked the features needed for live shows.

This realization hit him while preparing for a gig, as he struggled with his large, cumbersome setup. Over the next 90 days, Banks poured himself into developing Modbap Modular. He designed products specifically for DJs and beatmakers.

He also worked on branding and pitching his new company. To get the word out, he announced the launch on the podcast he hosted for fellow musicians.

From severance to entrepreneurial success

The response was overwhelming. Orders flooded in, and Banks had to quickly ramp up production to keep up with demand. “Am I really ready for this?” he asked himself as he juggled the roles of designer and business owner.

Modbap Modular officially started in October 2020. Since then, the company’s products have been stocked in over 40 stores across North America, Europe, and Asia. It has become a top choice for musicians seeking compact, powerful gear tailored to their needs.

“How do you eat an elephant in your path? One bite at a time,” Banks said, quoting an African proverb. He sees it as a metaphor for tackling challenges step by step as an entrepreneur.

Banks’ story shows how a job loss can be turned into a chance to bet on yourself and your dreams. With hard work and vision, he went from severance to success in the music industry.
