As you might probably remember, before search engines could deliver reasonable and useful results, we depended largely on directories to provide us with good sites in different categories. EasySurf.
cc is not exactly a site from that generation of directories, as the first register of it the Wayback Machine has is from 2001, but still is a simple collection of links to other sites organized by topic and category. Though it is quite clear that the site is not very frequently updated –and that it desperately needs to be—, and that most people probably don’t use it to find stuff in the net, there is a good chance for sites like this one to survive. We’ve been seeing for some time, and there some articles dealing with this topic, that directories are in for a new wave of attention grabbing, as per the appearance of social search engines and massive social bookmarking platforms, where people do essentially the same thing that old fashioned directories do: tag, organize and put together a bunch of sites which have things in common. Though there’s a lot of work to be done, probably the hardest bit of the job, which is learning about stuff and putting it together is already done, so all EasySurf.cc has to do is get a face wash, read a bit about what’s going on in the net, and probably get some people to write for them, and they’ll hopefully be up to become a trend maker in directory revival.
