Deel’s value has rocketed to a remarkable $12 billion under the management of entrepreneur Alex Bouaziz, who achieved such heights without drastically altering his team. Instead of heeding advice to overhaul his leadership team on the path to unicorn status, Bouaziz stuck with 80% of his original team, demonstrating trust in their abilities and a unique leadership style rooted in consistency and respect.
Since its inception in 2019, Deel, characterized by Bouaziz as an “utterly diverse creature” in contrast to his prior startups, has relied significantly on its original team. Despite advice on expansion from experienced business figures, Bouaziz largely stuck with his initially assembled team—a decision that has proven instrumental to his success.
Today, Deel is a unique entity in the startup world. It has thrived in the competitive realm of startups through Bouaziz’s leadership style and the team’s consistent support and dedication. Despite navigating potential industry pitfalls, Deel’s innovative approach remains its own.
Contrary to traditional startup growth advice, Bouaziz maintained most of his original management team as Deel grew.
Bouaziz’s leadership and Deel’s billion-dollar rise
He credits the team’s shared dedication and ambition as the driving forces behind Deel’s success. Now a multi-million dollar enterprise, Deel’s growth didn’t prompt Bouaziz to alter his core team. Instead, he champions building a strong team foundation early on and maintaining it throughout the growth stages.
In 2021, three years after its founding, Deel achieved unicorn status. This milestone was followed by acquiring eight similar employee engagement services, which increased its employee count from just 10 to 3,600 and significantly boosted its annual recurring revenue.
Bouaziz links Deel’s success to the ongoing commitment of early team members, a testament to the power of a strong, early-established team in driving a startup’s growth. Alongside this, Bouaziz cautions against excessive self-reliance, advocating for continual development and recruitment of new talent to rectify weaknesses.
Emphasizing the importance of keeping ahead of the curve, Bouaziz remains hopeful for Deel’s future development and is constantly fine-tuning his approach to maintain Deel’s innovative edge within the industry.
