Marlene Engelhorn, an Austrian heiress, has pledged to donate much of her $27 million inherited fortune to socially and environmentally focused organizations. Her wealth stems primarily from the Engelhorn family, founders of German chemical titan BASF. Marlene is driven by her commitment to social reform and environmental protection and aims to use her wealth to drive changes in these areas.

Engelhorn has publicly criticized the birthright lottery, rallying for changes to the current economic system. She has expressed her intention to be guided by a collective of representatives mirroring the priorities of the Austrian people in distributing her wealth.

Engelhorn will abstain from direct involvement in allocating funds to ensure a balanced process.

“Much of my inherited wealth has now been reallocated in line with democratic values,” stated Engelhorn. These funds will be channeled towards initiatives advocating for fair wealth distribution, fiscal transparency, and improved data on wealth accumulation.

This generous donation benefits the Momentum Institute, Attac Austria, a climate data research initiative, and the Austrian Nature Conservation Federation. The specific donation each organization receives ranges from 40,000 euros to a substantial 1.6 million euros.

Engelhorn’s philanthropy is intended to impact pivotal sectors, including housing, social integration and development, women’s rights, and poverty reduction. Through her efforts, she wishes to boost housing accessibility, foster more inclusive communities, champion women’s rights, and alleviate poverty. Engelhorn believes that her investment in these areas could significantly contribute to a fairer and more equitable world.

Beyond her monetary contribution, Engelhorn is also utilizing her influence to persuade political figures to adopt the representation method used in her fund distribution. She aims to foster further dialogue and take actionable steps regarding these issues within Austrian society.
