Finding apps for iOS devices is nowhere as easy as it should be, and you don’t need to be a genius to put your finger on what’s wrong. Anybody can see that what keeps the App Store from being a joy to use is its lack of true social integration. As it stands right now, all that Apple gives you is a couple of lists with the hottest and the newest apps that have hit the store. You really have no way of knowing what your friends are downloading, other than asking them directly.
And that’s what this new service is here to remedy. CrossWa.lk intends to become a true social store where you can always learn about all these apps that your friends have been getting.
In order to figure that out, CrossWa.lk’s asks you to submit your iPhone’s password. The company promises it won’t ever use it for anything more than looking at what kind of apps you’re installing. Yet, even then I can envision this being a problem with some people.
If you can get over this, though, then you’ll be getting a personalized profile where all your apps will go, and from which you’ll get to see all the apps that your friends are downloading. You’ll also get to see the ones they’ve “liked”, and since CrossWa.lk uses Apple’s API then you’ll get detailed descriptions and screenshots for all of them.
All in all, a very handy way to find cool apps to try out. And it’s certainly a much more pacific alternative to occupying the App Store, as Fred Wilson recently suggested. No doubt about it.
