Google has introduced a new interactive function, ‘circle to search’, for iOS users previously exclusive to Android. The function expands search capabilities and increases convenience by allowing iPhone users to instigate a search using tap, scribble or encircling gestures. This development ushers in a more personalised and intuitive search experience.

Despite certain restrictions on the iOS operating system, Google has customized a set-up for the iPhone 15 Pro to include this function. The design features an ‘Action Button’ to initiate visual searches, among other applications. Additionally, the updated application allows users to customize their Action Button with personalised Shortcuts; thereby, enhancing user efficiency and interface friendliness.

The new Shortcut aligns with Google’s focus on improving user interface and experience. Minsang Choi, Google Lens design manager, reiterated the intention behind the ‘Circle to Search’ function, which allows users to get faster results. He also hinted at the potential for increased use of Google Lens as a primary tool.

The new Shortcut offers a simplified method for iPhone users to start visual searches, echoing practices on Android devices. This development is indicative of Google’s continuous endeavors to reconcile user interface discrepancies between Android and iOS. By developing user-friendly interfaces that resonate with iOS users, Google emphasizes the industry-wide pursuit of balanced and effective solutions for various operating systems.

To use the Shortcut, iPhone users are required to install the Google app for iOS, download the Shortcut, and assign it to the Action Button. Notably, this process applies to various iPhone models as outlined in detail by leading news platform 9to5Mac.
