Nearly 300 suppliers protested at the headquarters of the Chinese company Temu on Monday, expressing their dissatisfaction with what they perceive as unfair refund practices causing financial strain on small businesses. They claim that the company’s methods of reducing prices and imposing exorbitant fines are leading to significant losses for small enterprises.

The protestors demanded immediate rectification of these practices and more transparency in their dealings with the company. As part of the protest, around 80 individuals even broke through the security protocols to enter the company’s offices, causing a disturbance and highlighting the need for better communication between the company and its suppliers.

Temu, a subsidiary of PDD Holdings, operates Pinduoduo, a leading online retail platform in China. Many of the protesting suppliers are small vendors who use this platform to sell inexpensive goods. They argue that the platform’s competitive pricing strategies harm their businesses. Despite this, Pinduoduo argues that its platform expands the market and increases opportunities for all sellers by reaching remote areas.

Temu’s refund policy sparks supplier protest

The protest suspended all activities at Temu, and the presence of local law enforcement resulted in many protestors leaving the premises. The company reiterated its commitment to listen and implement changes based on feedback despite its disappointment at the disruption caused by the protest. The protest highlighted the need for better communication and addressing grievances to create a more positive dialogue.

The main issue raised by the protestors is Temu’s policy of imposing penalties on sellers for every customer complaint or refund request. They argue that these fines are so high that they wipe out sellers’ earnings, stifling the growth of small businesses. Many believe this system needs to be revised, or it will continue to create a hostile business environment.

In response, Temu stated that it did not financially benefit from the penalties imposed on sellers and expressed a willingness to negotiate with sellers to resolve the current issues. This statement was released on Tuesday via the China Securities Journal, signaling the company’s readiness to engage with sellers and work towards resolving the problems.
