Shopping and geo-location services are a match made in Blissdonia. Services like the recently-launched Shopkick are a clear example of that, as they reward shoppers for actually entering stores and checking out their featured products.
CheckPoints is a new mobile app that has got some points in common with Shopkick. Like Shopkick, it is a service that is geared towards shoppers who are out and about, and that rewards them for their shopping activity. But there are some differences at play.
In both cases people have to check-in to prove that they are at the store. But Shopkick also necessitates that the retailer installs special equipment to prove the customer is really there. That is something alien to CheckPoints – the phone’s GPS is all that is needed to prove that customers are actually there.
And while users are rewarded for doing exactly the same thing using both applications (namely, scanning barcodes with their mobiles), Checkpoints had partnered with brands, not with retailers (like Shopkick has done). This means that those who use CheckPoints will be able to scan barcodes wherever they find them, without being limited to this store or the other.
