BlockChalk is a location-based system that takes a different approach to the one sites like Foursquare and Gowalla have taken, and that is a good thing as far as I am concerned – I don’t know how many of us really need yet another laser-copy of Foursquare. BlockChalk does something completely different, as it is an anonymous service for posting notes in you neighbourhood.
These notes are named “chalks, and they are posted in an entirely anonymous way. When launched, the system geolocates your position and it lets you post these “chalks” both in your neighborhood and in your block – the choice is yours.
You also choose what kind of note you will post. For example, you can post one praising the new baker, or one thanking a neighbour for having helped you out of any difficulty you might have had to face. You can also use such a system for reporting crimes – that is one of the most interesting uses of this platform, if you ask me.
These messages are automatically displayed when others check the area that you have posted your chalks in. These are displayed in a stream of chalks that is not so different from streams like Twitter’s. The one difference is that of anonymity, obviously. I frankly think this service can be potentially useful. If enough people catch on, then I see no reason why it would fail to take off.
BlockChalk.com In Their Own Words
“BlockChalk lets you use your mobile phone to leave messages in your neighborhood and see what your neighbors are saying. People are already using it to ask, answer, praise, gripe, report, prevent, borrow, trade, and much more. It’s easy and free: you don’t even have to sign up.”
Why BlockChalk.com It Might Be A Killer
It takes a concept that is in vogue such as location-based networking and gives it a treatment of its very own.
