Asteroids.com – The Music of the Nerdy Future

Asteroids.com is a web address that redirects to a YouTube video by an electronic rap artist named ytcracker. He was born Bryce Case, Jr. and has a history of doing some online ‘cracking’ or defacement of several federal and municipal government websites. He no longer performs these activities, rather focusing his attention on the genre of music known as ‘Nerdcore’.

The video on asteroids.com is for a song called ‘On My Starship’ and features a colorful animated spaceship centered over a background of stars and planets. The body of the starship is a window showing ytcracker performing the song. He is wearing a baseball cap and lip-syncs the music while dancing. The spaceship, or starship of the song title, bounces and changes colors throughout the video.

The song ‘On My Starship’ appears on the album ‘Space Mission’, which is published on the Nerdy South Records label. The tune is heavily electronic, with deep base notes, an ominous hum and keyboard figures over the top. The rapped lyrics to the song make multiple references to space travel and Star Trek. There are also lines referring to video games (“Science achievement unlocked”) and website construction (“My stylesheet hides all the replies”). These images and references are common in the Nerdcore type of music, as are curse words which make the song not safe for work, though the video imagery is innocuous enough. Asteroids.com also shows a number of different songs by ytcracker, such as ‘Dual Core – I Remember’, ‘Social Engineering’ and ‘LulzSec Anthem Song’.
