Assh.org – American Society for Hand Surgery

Assh.orgThis is my hands down favorite medical site, and though the pun is obviously intended, it’s also true: seldom is the case one finds a site with such a nice design and no-frills useful information for a huge audience, namely patients, doctors and society members. For instance, if you care to learn something about hand anatomy, here you will be able to find diagrams and drawings which simply yet effectively point out the different bits of the hand and joints, movements you can do with it and what the technical names for it are (great practice if an upcoming Trivial Pursuit challenge is on the way).

You will also be able to read detailed safety tips pertaining regular home chores, like pumpkin carving or snow blower operation (strange that there is not one word about healthy hand position for keyboards and mouses). You can also use the site to learn about the different kinds of surgical procedures and the importance of seeing a specialist, plus you can use the searchable directory on the site to find one in your area. If you happen to know a hand surgeon in your area, and that person is yourself, hopefully you’ll remember all of that information by heart, and will find the next bit of the site more interesting, namely the one where you can research and clinical resources, like transcripts of seminars, papers and dissertations, plus extensive information on scholarships and grant programs for research purposes. If you are a doctor and are interested in becoming a hand surgeon, lots of detailed information on hospitals and postgraduate programs are available from Assh.org to help you start your search. Whether you live/practice in the US or overseas, you can become a member of the Society if your application is approved; you will be able to learn all about the process and find all the forms you are requested to fill on the site.
