Arkive.org – ARKiving to Raise Awareness and Save Species

The world of modern technology has entered the fight to save endangered species with the presence of ARKive and the archive of information found at arkive.org. Founded in 2003, the organization’s goal involves raising awareness about threatened species and promoting conservation of them through wildlife imagery. The staff has gathered some of the best films and photographs of endangered animals from around the world and placed them all in the centralized, digital library found on the ARKive website. More than 3500 top film makers and photographers lent their talents and productions to this special project.

This electronic information, arkive.org says, will be available to future generations to access, the same way that individuals can access the information now, whether scientists, conservationists, school students or members of the general public. A breakdown of the pupil educational resources listed makes it easy to find appropriate information for the age range from 5 to 7 years, up to ages from 16 to 18, and everything in between.

A search for several endangered species groups can take place on arkive.org. For instance, under the Fish category, readers can study about nearly 1000 fish, including the great white shark, the spotted hand fish or the swordfish. In the Plants and Algae section, site visitors can see pictures or view videos about the Venus flytrap, common holly or bladder wrack, in addition to more than 6000 other species. The Conservation Status category lists 88 species for whom extinction has already taken place. This would include, the Amastrid land snail, Hula painted frog and the Mysterious starling.
