Apple has confirmed that a new software update for AirPods Pro 2 will bring hearing aid functionalities to users in the U.K. within the coming weeks. The update follows recent changes in U.K. regulations that allow the earbuds to be used as hearing aids. The AirPods Pro 2 already includes a Hearing Test feature, enabling users to take a validated home hearing test to determine their need for hearing aid assistance.

While these features are already available in the U.S., the U.K. has only recently updated its policies to permit the use of AirPods Pro 2 as hearing aids.

British Health Secretary Wes Streeting commented, “Britain can be a powerhouse for medical technology, but only if we rip out pointless regulation that suffocates innovation.” This regulatory change opens the door for Apple to provide its hearing aid capabilities on the AirPods Pro 2 in the U.K.

Apple expressed its enthusiasm in a statement: “With the new policy guidance from the U.K. Department of Health and Social Care, we look forward to bringing the hearing aid feature on AirPods Pro 2 in the coming weeks to help improve the daily lives of so many U.K. users.”

The software update, which may arrive with iOS 18 or through new firmware, will allow AirPods Pro 2 to support individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Although the battery life of AirPods Pro 2 may not match that of traditional hearing aids and will require periodic recharging, they offer the benefit of being less noticeable, potentially reducing the social stigma sometimes associated with conventional hearing aids. Apple’s statement indicates a release timeline in January or February, offering an innovative solution for many in the U.K. who struggle with hearing issues. The rollout of these features is expected to enhance the utility of AirPods Pro for users with hearing needs.
