Apple has introduced groundbreaking hearing health features for the AirPods Pro 2 in a recent firmware update. The update includes a hearing test, hearing aid functionality, and active hearing protection. The hearing test can be taken on the iOS Health app in about five minutes.

It plays tones that you respond to by tapping your screen. The results show your scores for both ears and indicate if you have any hearing loss. You can track your ear health over time by retaking the test.

The hearing aid feature boosts frequencies and produces clearer, more vibrant sound. It makes real-time adjustments based on your surroundings. This enhances how music sounds on the buds and helps people with hearing issues hear better.

The hearing protection feature reduces loud noise in environments up to 110 dBA. It works across all listening modes and the ear tips help with noise reduction.

This makes daily life easier on your ears. Often what you find is that it’s almost accepted that your hearing will change over time and fade away,” says Sumbul Desai, MD, vice president of health at Apple. The company aims to combat this stigma by integrating hearing aid functionality into a common device.

Apple hopes people will recognize the benefits of using AirPods Pro 2 as hearing aids. They can then continue using them or transition to a more powerful hearing aid if needed. “A lot of times, when people actually go get over the hump and use a hearing aid, they often take them out because it’s a big adjustment for your brain to now be hearing and processing that sound,” says Desai.

At $250, using AirPods Pro 2 as hearing aids is more affordable than other over-the-counter options. However, those with severe hearing loss may still need specialized devices with longer battery life and advanced features. Apple’s new hearing health features in the AirPods Pro 2 will make a big impact on how hearing loss is addressed.

By turning a popular product into a functional hearing aid, Apple is increasing accessibility and reducing the stigma around hearing aids. As these features roll out, their true potential to benefit millions will become clear.
