WhereIsNow is a search engine that intends to let users find the latest version of any document. That is, using this solution a user is always redirected to its most recent version, saving him effort and giving him the peace of mind that comes when he knows that he won’t waste his time by resorting to an outdated document.
From a technical point of view, WhereIsNow works by giving each registered document an associated key, and every time a new version of the document becomes available the address that the publisher supplied when registering it is updated.
As the team behind this initiative righty point out, the problem this solution takes care of (IE, that of a user getting is hand on an older version of a document when a more recent one was available) could theoretically be solved in other ways. For instance, the publisher can notify users by e-mail that a new version has become available. Trouble is, people do not always check their e-mails that diligently, and any resource that addresses such a shortcoming is a good one on my book.
